Dogs and cats are certainly two of the most popular domestic animals. They also are a source of allergies for many people. Currently, there are between 50 and 60 million dogs in America living with humans at their homes. Allergy to dogs has been detected in 14 percent of the American adolescent population and 40 percent of the children who suffer asthma.

The concentration of the Can fI allergen varies among the different dog species. It can be found in the epithelium and also in the skin, the hair and the saliva of dogs. It is not present in the urine nor in the excrement.

Approximately 50 million cats live in the United States. A recent study shows that between 2 and 30 percent of cat owners are allergic to their pets and 40 to 50 percent of the people who suffer from allergies and have a cat prove positive to allergy tests.

The most important allergen that can be found in cats is Fel dI. It is present in the saliva glands, capillary follicles and even in the brain. It is segregated through the saliva and tears.

The molecule is very sticky and persistent and for that reason a person may be show signs of allergy to cats without having them at home since the molecule may be attached to clothes.

Allergy to pollen

People who are allergic to pollen may be affected by even a small part of a pollen grain, that is to say an extremely low fraction. For those who suffer from hey fever, it is better to stay inside during the busy pollination hours, 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

It is also recommendable to keep the house and the car windows closed and to use an air purifier with a high efficiency filter. A person who is allergic to pollen should avoid any gardening work, such as mowing the lawn.

It is necessary not to exercise outside in the morning and have showers and wash the hair frequently to eliminate the pollen that may be deposited on them. When it comes to vacations, it is better to choose a place near the say, where there is a lower concentration of pollen.

Avoid eating honey or any other substance produced by bees, since they may contain pollen.
